Sno-King 14U Bantams Win State..Next Stop USA Hockey Nationals!

14U Junior Thunderbirds to represent Washington State at the USA Hockey National Tournament

(March 1, 2015), Kirkland, WA - Sno-King 14U A2 Bantam hockey team, won the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association’s (PNAHA) State Championship this weekend in Spokane earning a spot in the USA Hockey National 14U Tier II Tournament to be hosted in Salt Lake City, UT March 26-30.

The Junior Thunderbirds went undefeated in pool play, beating Sno-King’s A3 team (4-0), the Wenatchee Jr. Wild (4-2), and the Spokane Jr. Chiefs (5-4).

The ability to work cohesively as a team ultimately helped the Junior Thunderbirds go on to beat the Tacoma Rockets (4-2) in the semi-finals. The championship game, held against Seattle Junior’s AAA Bantam team, ended in a decisive 6-0 win – earning the team its second shutout of the weekend and qualifying them for the USA Hockey National Tournament later this month.

“This team competed with a lot of heart, class, and determination,” said Doug Kirton, Sno-King’s hockey director.  “We’re excited they have the chance to represent Sno-King at the national level.”

Sno-King 14U A2 is coached by Lloyd Shaw and Corey Schwab, both of whom have previous professional hockey experience.  The team has amassed an impressive season record (46 wins, 14 losses, 5 ties) and play in both the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association (PNAHA) and the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) leagues. Their invitational tournaments have included the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament and Phoenix Invitational.

The team is currently fundraising via www.gofundme.com/birdstonattys to help offset travel expenses to Salt Lake City.

The Sno-King 14U A2 team consists of middle school and high school players with birth years 2000 and 2001 and hail from the Seattle area including Auburn, Everett, Issaquah, Kenmore, Kent, Maple Valley, Mercer Island, Renton, Sammamish, Seattle, Snohomish, and Woodinville.  Embracing USA Hockey’s Long-Term Development Model, the team includes many multi-sport athletes including a participant in the 2013 Little League World Series, another attended USA Baseball National Development Camp, and a third is a West Coast Starz National Middle School Lacrosse athlete.  Two of the players will be representing Washington State hockey at the USA Hockey Nationals for a second year in a row.

U14 Western Regional Development Camp Champs

Turner Stevenson (pictured top left), Sno-King's Elite A1 Bantam coach was invited to the USA Hockey Western Regional High Performance Camp in Colorado Springs and just returned from the five day camp.  Sno-King's Hockey Director, Doug Kirton, was recruited by USA Hockey to return as a coach at this event also.
This is a very unique camp as it utilizes the concepts of the American Development Model (ADM) and Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD).  The camp takes place on the Colorado College Campus with 10 teams comprised of the top 200 players from: Rocky Mountain (AZ,CO,ID,NM,UT,OK,TX), Pacific (CA,OR,WA,NV.HW,AK) and Northern Plains (MT,ND,SD,WY) Districts of USA Hockey.

The entire coaching staff was comprised of coaches from across the US in all levels of professional, college, junior and prep school hockey programs.  The focus of the camp is on player development and education.  The coaches spend 5 days collaborating on practice plans and structure, team building, and coaching philosophy and put it all into practical application on the ice with the players. Coach Turner would like to congratulate the Washington participants for representing the State. They were Dawson Butt, Donald Cribbs, Luke Frost, Kenny Gill, Sam Myers, Conner Pitlick, Braden Sanchez, Jakob Stevenson, DJ Tamburo, Easton Thomas, Dawson Tritt, Marco Valenti, Tyler Wong, Jake Zalud, Elliot Bucci, Conall Muldoon, Cameron Crispeno and Nic Fitzmaurice.

Sno-King Ice Arenas Signs Purchase Agreement for KVIC

The 50th Season of Sno-King Hockey continues to be memorable both on and off the ice.

  • In September, USA Hockey selected Sno-King as an American Development Model Association, reflecting how Hockey Director Doug Kirton and our volunteer coaches have embraced the principles of long term athletic development.
  •
  • In January, thanks to the photography of member parent Chris Colgan, we graced the cover of USA Hockey Magazine and entered the homes of over half a million hockey players.
  •
  • In February, we held our annual fundraising auction, which was a big success thanks to the generosity of the Sno-King family.
  • Over the last couple weeks, our hockey teams' season culminated in games and tournaments around the state and the country.

But today I have perhaps the most exciting and dramatic announcement yet. . .

Sno-King Ice Arenas has reached an agreement to purchase the Kent Valley Ice Centre

. . .subject to feasibility, financing and court approval.

The Board of Directors, staff members, and I are thrilled to add Kent Valley Ice Centre to our portfolio of rinks.  It's an excellent, established facility with an active and loyal customer base, a solid revenue stream, and a supportive partnership with the City of Kent.  In the experienced hands of Sno-King’s Director of Facilities, Jamie Huscroft, Kent Valley Ice Centre will enhance Sno-King's ability to excel in serving our purpose and mission to support youth hockey and on-ice athletics.

By combining our efforts across all three facilities, we will quickly realize economies of scale and hope to give patrons of each rink more opportunities at the rink closest to their homes.  In fact, our customers and members are drawn to Sno-King from a wide geographic area, including many from South King County and northern Pierce County.  For these folks and for their northern counterparts near the Snohomish/King County area, the dream of spending less time driving to the rink and more time on the ice can soon become a reality.

As the transaction is being finalized, I will be spending time with the leadership of the Kent Valley Hockey Association, a tenant of the facility.  KVHA has a talented leadership and membership who also have a great relationship with the Seattle Thunderbirds.  We will want to leverage those strengths to continue to grow Kent into a thriving and affordable hockey program for years to come.

Our membership has such a strong volunteer spirit that I know many of you will immediately ask, "How can I help?"  We will be busy tending to the details of completing the official transaction and then must quickly pivot to planning our programming for next season.

Registration will open early this year - the best way you can help is to register your kids early for the next season so that we can best plan our ice schedules and programming.

I can't promise that our 51st Season will have quite as many dramatic announcements as the 50th Season, but I hope you will agree that the future of Sno-King is looking very bright and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next!

Regards, Gordon Brown

Executive Director (Sno-King Hockey Association / Sno-King Ice Arenas)

Bantam Green Wins Wenatchee Cup!
Congratulations to Sno-King Green who won the Wenatchee Apple Cup for Bantams in a hotly contested tournament. They started the tournament on Saturday with a tough 5-2 loss against Tri-Cities, in a score line that didn't reflect the way either team played. Going into Saturday evening's game with Portland Black Tie, Sno-King needed a big victory to have any chance of an automatic spot in the semi-finals, but a late goal gave them a 2-2 tie, and sent them to the wild card round. It was Portland again - this time Portland Whiteout -- that Sno-King had to face, and an early lead of 3-0 was eroded to 3-1 in the third. A late goal from Portland made for a frantic finish, but Green came through with 3-2 victory, and a date and rematch with Tri-Cities in the semi finals. This time the tables were turned, and Sno-King dominated from the first whistle, cruising to a 5-0 victory, and a date in the final rematching Portland Black Tie, who had eliminated Kent in the semi finals by a score of 3-1. Sno-King were the hungrier of the two teams, pushing hard from the get go, and getting out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, that they built on, finally winning by 6 goals to 1, and taking the Wenatchee Apple Cup back to Seattle.

Corey Schwab on Goalie Development

Few positions on the ice can compare to the goalie. Goaltenders are saddled with a task unlike any other and can be hailed as heroes and scapegoats depending on the outcome of each game. Coaching them can come with its own differences as well. But just because you never stepped between the pipes doesn’t mean you can’t develop strong goaltending.

Kevin Reiter, goaltending coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, and Corey Schwab, goalie development coach for the San Jose Sharks, have some advice for youth hockey coaches.

New Electric Zamboni at Kirkland
There is a cliché where 50 year olds have mid-life crisis’s and go out and buy shiny new convertibles.  Sno-King is contributing to that cliché, as in our 50th season we are now sporting a new electric Zamboni at the Kirkland Arena.

The Sno-King board decided to purchase the new electric Zamboni for multiple reasons.
  1.
  2. The current Zambonis are getting up in age and the repairs and maintenance on them are close to the cost of financing a new Zamboni.

  3. Our spare Zamboni was a loaner from the Mulligan family (Many thanks to them) and they are going to need it for their own outdoor rink on the other side of the mountains this year.  (pretty cool huh?)

  4. The electric Zamboni has many benefits over the propane-powered units.
    1. Safety
The Renton facility, being much newer and designed to be an ice arena, has multiple redundant sensors and alarms and a ventilation system designed to deal with possible carbon monoxide leaks from an ice resurfacer.

The Kirkland facility doesn’t have that and we have historically relied on the staff taking readings consistently with handheld monitors to keep our members safe.

    2. Lower Operation Costs
The cost per ice cut is 1/8th of what it costs for propane.

    3. Decreased Maintenance/Repair Costs
All of the engine maintenance is gone and replaced with minimal battery/electric motor maintenance.
No more having to deal with the hassles of propane tanks will free up staff time.

    4. Better Reliability
There are a lot fewer moving parts to fail.

    5. Positive Environmental Impact
Minimal emissions due to the Pacific Northwest's predominant use of clean and cleaner energy for its power generation.

Sno-King Designated as Model Club by USA Hockey

USA Hockey announced that Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association (playing out of arenas in Kirkland and Renton, WA) has been certified as a USA Hockey Model Association.

Sno-King becomes one of only 11 associations in the nation to receive this designation.

With the designation, Sno-King committed to follow the American Development Model (ADM) in full at the 8-and-under, 10-and-under, and 12-and-under age groups.  The ADM is based on age-appropriate training to fully benefit children in their development, regardless of ability level.

As a benefit of their model program designation, Sno-King will receive added support from USA Hockey to assist in implementing the ADM throughout their programs, including equipment, signage, and educational materials. Further, they will receive on-going staff support from USA Hockey's national office, including in-depth coach training.

Mite Major Green Runner Up in Spring Tournament

Mite Major Green took second place in the Sno-King's Mite Invitational Tournament over the weekend.  After a victory over the Tacoma Rockets, Green prevailed in a tight 3-1 victory over Sno-King Grey.  Day two brought a matchup against the previously undefeated Ridge Meadows Jets.  After falling behind 2-0 in the 1st, the Green offense came to life and scored seven goals leading to a 7-5 victory.  That win set up a semifinal matchup against Sno-King Blue.  Less than one month ago, Blue prevailed over Green in a shootout victory in the semifinals of the Wenatchee Apple Cup.  After Blue took a 4-3 lead, Green scored five in a row to win 8-4.  The boys barely had time to take off their skates and chug a Gatorade before the final game against the Langley Vipers.  Playing Canadian teams in Mite is always a challenge since our teams are composed of 6, 7, and 8 year olds while the visitors usually bring all 8 year olds.  This game was no different.  In a back and forth game, Green was able to close to within one goal at 5-4 with five minutes to play but could not get the equalizer before time expired.  While the team was disappointed not to have won the final, in reflection they fought hard against a talented opponent and gave a good accounting of Sno-King hockey.  Thanks Green for a great tournament and a heck of a season!

Bantam Blue Takes Second In Wenatchee Cup

The Bantam Blue team came home with a second place finish after a hard fought weekend at the Wenatchee Cup, January 19th-21st.

The team had a rough start to the weekend on Saturday morning with a loss against the South Delta Chiefs with a score of 4-0.  The Bantam Blue's second game of the tournament on Saturday was versus the Wenatchee Jr. Wild.  The Bantam Blue squad came away with a 5-0 win.  On Sunday morning the team played the Kent Valley Tornados and was victorious in that game as well, with a strong 5-0 win.

Then ranked in second place in their pool, the Bantam Blue team had to then face off against the Pool B first place South Delta Giants on Sunday night.  It was an extremely close game through the first two periods with a score of 1-1 after the second.  After an additional goal by the Giants, the Bantam Blue team pulled away with four unanswered goals.  Victorious with a final of 5-2, the Bantam Blue team advanced to the Championship game on Monday.

On Monday morning the team's opponent was once again the South Delta Chiefs.  In a battle to the very end, the Bantam Blue team came up just short in the Championship game with a loss against the Chiefs 3-2 and placing second overall at the Wenatchee Cup.

It was a great weekend of hockey and a great weekend for the Sno-King organization as the Sno-King White team also participated in the Wenatchee Cup.  Both teams, Blue and White, players and parents, were continuously out at each others games routing and cheering for one another and coming together to represent Sno-King Hockey!

Sno-King PeeWee Blue takes 2nd Place at the Moses Lake Classic

PeeWee Blue played outstanding hockey for 5 games in less that 48 hours to earn second place at the Winter Classic.  After a 10-1 win over Moses Lake and a 19-1 victory over Wenatchee the team faced a tough Kent Hurricanes team in the final game of pool play.  Keeping the game tied going into the 3rd period, they were unable to pull out the win forcing a matchup with Sno-King Green Sunday morning.  Edging a 6-4 win in a very competetive game with Green the team forced a rematch against Kent for the championship.  The final game was a nail-biter with a 1-1 deadlock after 2 before Kent scored the go ahead goal on a 5-3 power play and added another late goal for the 3-1 win.  With points in the tournament from every player on the team it was an outstanding effort and fun weekend for all. It was also an outstanding showing for SKAHA with our 2 teams finishing 2nd and 3rd in the tournament.

Our Mite Major Green team had a fantastic showing at their most recent Tournament in Canada versus H4 Canadian teams (8 year olds). Game one resulted in a 10-0 shut out. The second game versus the Ridge Meadows Warriors was a close game with the first period ending in a tied score. Mite Green fought hard and ended the second game with a 4-2 score. Game Three versus the Vancouver Thunder was nail biting with each team battling to stay ahead. Mite Green scored with 2 minutes left in the third period to win 6-5. Mite Green extended their three game winning streak to four games ending their fourth and final game 8-3. Mite Green received contributions from the entire roster including our 6 and 7 year olds who were playing against older competition. The Team also utilized three different Goalies. Bantam T2 Takes Second in Spokane

Three days. Five games. Amazing effort. Tremendous heart!! Our SnoKing Bantam AA team took a solid 2nd place at the Spokane Bantam Fall Classic AA Tournament November 30-December 2. The weekend began with a loss to Spokane on Friday night, but quickly picked up momentum with a win against Creston B.C. Saturday morning (9-2). After a break in the day, the boys posted a victory against High River (5-4) Saturday evening. Many celebrated that win with a frigid ice bath (something Coach Shammah learned from Boston College Div 1 hockey coach Brooke Whitney) and an early turn in that night. The work continued Sunday morning, with our boys grinding out a huge "W" in the semi-final game against Portland (4-3) to advance to the final game against Spokane. Although the host team ended up taking 1st place, our mighty T-Birds headed home with the 2nd place trophy in hand.

The team, coaches and parents would like to give a special shout out to the Bantan B All Star Team for also taking 2nd place in their division that weekend!

Back on I-90 and off to Tri-Cities December 8-9.

A notable weekend event includes the induction of a new member to the SnoKing Bantam AA Broken Bone Club. Jimmy Frey joins the current roster of Daniel Zenkovich and Connor Loos. Jimmy fractured his radius bone in his forearm in the game Saturday against Creston B.C. He was a trooper throughout the weekend, and plans to re-jion the team by February. In case anyone is interested, membership in this exclusive Club is officially closed.

Sno-King Bantam B State team take 2nd at Spokane B Classic

The Sno-King Bantam State team went 3-1-1 at the Spokane Bantam B Fall Classic Tournament at the Eagle Ice Arena in Spokane, November 30th to December 2nd.

The squad kicked off the weekend with a game against the Kootenay Jr. Ice. Although the team came out very strong, good goaltending by the Jr. Ice lead to a 3-3 tie.

For their second game, the team faced off against the Boise Hawks, which proved to be a physical and challenging game, but ended with a 4-1 win.

Game 3 was a match up against the hometown Spokane Jr. Chiefs.  Once again the team was victorious, winning 3-0.During the first round of playoffs on Sunday morning the team played the Spokane Jr. Chiefs.  After a hard fought game by both teams, Sno-King advanced to the championship with a 1-0 win.

The team closed out the weekend with the Championship game versus the Boise Hawks. With renewed energy, the Hawks proved to be a fierce opponent.  The Bantam B team fell short losing to Boise and taking second place in the tournament.   With a great showing both offensively and defensively, and with each of the goalies posting shut outs over the weekend.

It was a great first tournament for the Bantam B team, Coach Anderson and Coach Stevenson.
